Bearing scars.

This aspen tree was once a favorite of a black bear or two.
It was climbed many times as the bears fed on the spring catkins high up in the canopy of the tree.
Fresh climbing sign  does not look like this. These scars have been on the tree a while and blackened and grown wider as the tree grew.
